HOW TO USE GLYCERYL MONOSTEARATE IN COSMETIC FORMULATION

Use between 1 to 4% as a co-emulsifier, opacifier and thickener in cosmetic formulation.

The Differences Between Organic Glyceryl Stearate and Organic Glyceryl Monostearate.

Organic Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS) and Organic Glyceryl Stearate are both emulsifiers and skin-conditioning agents commonly used in cosmetics and skincare products. While they are closely related, they have distinct differences in composition, function, and applications:

1. Chemical Composition

• Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS):

  • Composed primarily of a single glycerol molecule bound to one stearic acid molecule.

  • Typically contains a higher proportion of the monoester form (one fatty acid attached to glycerol).

• Glyceryl Stearate:

  • A mix of mono-, di-, and tri-esters of glycerol with stearic acid.

  • Contains a broader range of ester forms compared to GMS, making it slightly more versatile.

2. Function in Products

• Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS):

  • Acts as an emulsifier, thickening agent, and stabilizer.

  • Provides a smooth texture in formulations.

  • Often used for its ability to enhance hydration by creating a protective barrier on the skin.

• Glyceryl Stearate:

  • Primarily used as an emulsifier to blend water and oil phases.

  • Also has humectant (moisture-retaining) and skin-softening properties.

  • Helps improve the feel of products on the skin, making them silky and smooth.

3. Texture and Application

• Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS):

• Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS):

• Glyceryl Stearate:

5. Common Uses

• Glyceryl Monostearate (GMS):

Organic Glyceryl Monostearate can act as a standalone emulsifier, use between 3-10%. It is a better thickener and an occlusive agent than Glyceryl Stearate. 
It is excellent in making skin moisturizers and stabilizer in emulsions.

It is added to the oil phase of formulation.
