It is a strong natural alternative to Carbomer.
It is very useful in making soft lotions, creams (emulsion) and crystal clear serums and hair gels.
It is a free flowing powder derived from wood.
The good thing about HEC powder is that it helps reduces irritation and increase foaming.
Note: HEC is not soluble in organic solvent but it can dissolve in cold or hot water.
Usage Rate:
Serum Formulation: 0.2-0.3% (dissolve in water)
Lotion Or Cream : 0.2%
Gel Formulation: 0.5 - 2% (dissolve in water)
Shampoo, Hand Sanitizers, etc - Use up to 3% (dissolve in water)
How To Hydrate Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Powder:
Option 1:
Mix with glycerin and add water, mix continuously for at least 30 to 40 minutes for it to be well hydrated.
The first option is good if you are making emulsions like lotion or cream
Option 2:
How To Hydrate HEC Powder.
Dissolve it in water and blend for at least 60 minutes until you get a gel consistency.
If left for 24 hours, HEC will form a crystal clear gel.
For peace of mind, add a little preservative, if you want to keep it longer than 24 hours for all your cosmetic formulation.
Note: The most important part of using HEC powder is the hydration part.
You have to hydrate it first to prevent separation.
Minimum hydrating time is 30minutes to 1 hour.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Gel Recipe (Sample Recipe To Make A Gel From Hydroxyethyl Cellulose
HEC powder - 1g or 1%
Distilled Water - 98g or 98%
Euxyl PE 9010 Preservative - 1g or 1%
How To Make Gel With Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Powder (Stable Recipe)

Measure 1g of HEC Powder in a clean beaker

Add 98g of distilled water

Mix well for 30 to 60 minutes with immersion blender or homogenizer

Add the preservative
-
Check the pH (it should be between 4.4 and 6.6)

Adjust with 50/50 citric acid solution or 10/90 lye solution if necessary

The above pH is the recommended pH for HEC gel stability.

It will take 24 hours for HEC to fully hydrate.

Check your gel in 24 hours for the desired texture
